Replacement vacuum tools are usually matched by the size and type of connection they use. Before ordering, measure the end of the rod, wand or hose handle that connects to the tool, then check whether it is a plain round push-fit or a locking connection.
Common fitting sizes in Australia include 32mm, 35mm, 36mm and 38mm. They are separate sizes, and the hose diameter is not always the same as the rod or floor-tool connection.
How to Measure Your Vacuum Rod or Hose End
Measure the part that actually joins to the replacement tool. If a rod, wand or fitting slides into another part, measure its outside diameter. If you are checking the receiving socket, measure the inside diameter.

Use millimetres. A metric ruler works for most fittings. A caliper is useful when the measurement falls close to two sizes.

Measure the correct surface. Measure the outside of the male fitting and the inside of the female socket.

Measure through the centre. Run the ruler straight across the widest point of the round fitting, not on an angle.

Check the connection style. Look for a taper, locking button, clip, tab or electrical contact before choosing a replacement part.

A quick measurement helps you avoid ordering a floor tool, brush or attachment that is too loose or too tight.

Two parts can have a similar diameter but still use different tapers, locking tabs or connector shapes.
Know when an adaptor can help
A 32mm to 35mm adaptor can solve some round push-fit size differences, but it cannot replace a locking or powered connection.
Common Vacuum Accessory Sizes
Use the size as a starting point, then check the actual connection before ordering.

35mm is used on a range of domestic and commercial vacuums. If the connection has a locking button, clip or shaped neck, check more than the diameter before ordering.

38mm is a separate fitting size used on some commercial and workshop vacuum hoses and tools. Do not treat 36mm and 38mm as interchangeable, and do not assume the hose diameter is the same as the floor-tool connection.
Miele barrel and pull-along vacuums use Miele's locking floorhead and wand connection. A plain round tool is not a direct replacement just because the diameter looks similar. Check the model and the locking tabs. Miele upright and stick vacuums use different systems and are not covered by this note.

What if the Measurement Looks Like 33mm?
Measure it again through the centre and check for a taper, worn plastic edge or an adaptor already fitted to the tube.
A reading near 33mm may still correspond to a nominal 32mm fitting after a careful remeasurement, but confirm the fit before ordering.
Can a 32mm to 35mm Adaptor Fix a Size Mismatch?

Do I measure the inside or outside of the vacuum rod?
Measure the outside diameter of the male rod or wand that inserts into the floor tool. If you are measuring the receiving socket in a floor tool, measure its inside diameter.
My vacuum rod measures about 33mm. Is it a 32mm fitting?
It may be, but check again before ordering. Measure through the centre and look for taper, wear or an adaptor already fitted to the tube.
